BHP Billiton Marketing in Singapore achieves Green Mark Platinum

BHP Billiton recently achieved Green Mark Platinum and LEED Gold certification for their 230,000sqm regional headquarters in MBFC, Singapore.

The project success is a result of a completely collaborative design process that enabled the Geyer design team and the BHP Billiton engineering team, information technology team, client team and most particularly the facilities team, who would ultimately operate the facility for its lifetime, to become completely aligned. This holistic design approach meant that all aspects of the project were being considered from inception to completion to ensure that the final solution would support a seamless transition from design to operations.

After significant research and modelling, BHP Billiton decided to install the largest LED office interior lighting in the region, outside the sole existing example in Europe (at the time).  Although this required significant additional capital expenditure, the 4.6 year payback period in terms of reduced quantity of fittings, longer replacement cycles and reduced FM labour was considered a very worthwhile investment.

BCA Green Mark is a green building rating system to evaluate a building for its environmental impact and performance. It is endorsed and supported by the National Environment Agency. It provides a comprehensive framework for assessing the overall environmental performance of new and existing buildings to promote sustainable design, construction and operations practices in buildings.

The assessment identifies the specific energy efficient and environment-friendly features and practices incorporated in the projects. Points are awarded for incorporating environment-friendly features which are better than normal practice. The total number of points obtained will provide an indication of the environmental friendliness of the building design and operation. Depending on the overall assessment and point scoring, the building will be certified to have met the BCA Green Mark Platinum, GoldPlus, Gold or Certified rating.
