Geyer Designer Tom Reid was invited to join a Design Master Class with Patricia Urquiola to celebrate Space Furniture’s 20 Year Anniversay.
Following the acclaimed ‘Semina’ workshop held at Domaine de Boisbuchet in France last summer, Patricia Urquiola led an exclusive series of master classes in Australia for three groups of designers and architects in Sydney and Melbourne.
The program focused on the ideas behind ‘Semina’ - the avant-garde arts magazine of the late 1950s and 60s.
Drawing on Patricia Urquiola’s interest in materials and the way that things go together, the master class took designers out of the office and into the workshop to explore ideas through the hands-on skills of making, with a focus on form, material and collage. The workshop aimed to re-launch a process of research through a very open idea of collage that relates to contemporary life.
The mantra for the day was to think with your hands. Leaving all negativity and fear of ridicule at the door, the workshop really allowed us to dive into creating and collating instinctively; using sourced materials to form, sculpt, model, create and build.
