Westpac Melbourne HQ Designed for adaptive capability: agile people and property

Westpac’s landmark environment in Melbourne encourages its people to embrace a more efficient and effective workplace proposition that enables swift response to change. The workplace delivers on Westpac's key business imperatives: to make people an important part of their advantage and to reinforce their leadership and sustainability focus. Situated in an iconic location at 150 Collins Street, Westpac’s new Melbourne headquarters allows the company to have a high profile city location that differentiates itself from competitors.

The Geyer designed environment is human centered, supporting Westpac's focus on people as a significant part of their advantage. The people first approach involved translating Westpac's WorkSMART strategy into the physical workplace. Geyer undertook a time utilisation study to determine the appropriate level of activity based working for Westpac to adopt given the nature of work within the building. The resulting design strategy focused on intuitive space planning based on natural human behaviours. A pilot floor tested the recommended level of activity-based working and has been a key tool in the change management strategy for the adoption of WorkSMART.

The Melbourne workplace has a significant focus on health and wellbeing to enhance performance and effectiveness, and provides opportunities to foster community and create a sense of belonging. Westpac's agile working environment is designed to provide flexibility in how and where Westpac people work. Designated neighbourhoods were adopted with 100% non-designated seating across the whole business; each neighbourhood provides a diversity of places to work, reflect, share knowledge, socialise, engage and connect. There is a breadth of spaces that provide a wider selection of choices with less delineation between work positions and other places to work. Every space within the workplace is considered another place to work or exchange with both colleagues and clients, with a multitude of hospitality destinations for meetings and entertainment.

The central stair also provides a visual connection to the street, anchoring the workplace to the Collins Street address. Underpinning the agility of the workplace is the adoption of evolved technology and storage strategies to support mobility, facilitating an innovative flexible working environment across different brands and geographies.150 Collins Street is designed to achieve a 5 Star NABERS and 6 Star Green Star rating. The climate responsive architecture applies advanced green technology and principles throughout to ensure minimum energy usage. The ecological design is compatible with Westpac’s leadership in sustainability.
